How strikethrough text actually works

Unlike bold or script variants — which swap each letter for a different Unicode codepoint — strikethrough text layers a second character on top of every letter you type. The generator appends Combining Long Stroke Overlay (U+0336) after each character, and the rendering engine draws the overlay straight through the letter before it. Your original letters are still intact underneath, which is why the text stays searchable, copyable and legible even with the line through it. Because combining characters are real Unicode, strikethrough text pastes into Instagram, TikTok, Discord, WhatsApp and X without any setup.

Where strikethrough text earns its line

The single most common use is crossed-out pricing — 'w̶a̶s̶ ̶$̶9̶9̶ now $49' turns a normal caption into a sales post without a graphic editor. Sarcastic and self-editing posts are the other big home for strikethrough; the 'I had plans F̶r̶i̶d̶a̶y̶ forever' joke reads in one glance. Discord announcements use strikethrough to flag cancelled events, retired roles and outdated links while still showing readers the old text. Instagram captions, TikTok pinned comments and X threads all accept strikethrough as a quiet editorial tool — a way to say 'scratch that' without rewriting.

Tips before you paste strikethrough text

Two things to keep in mind. First, some apps strip combining marks when you paste — notably a handful of older email clients and certain bio fields that truncate Unicode aggressively. If the line disappears on paste, the target app is the limiter, not the generator. Second, screen readers read the underlying letters as-is, ignoring the strike; if accessibility matters to your audience, keep at least one plain-text line nearby so the post still makes sense read aloud. Beyond those two caveats, strikethrough text renders cleanly on every modern iOS, Android, Windows and macOS build. For related editorial tones that don't carry the same accessibility trade-off, bold fonts and small caps are the natural neighbours; for another combining-mark novelty, try upside-down text.

Frequently asked questions

How does strikethrough text paste into an Instagram bio? +

Instagram's bio accepts Unicode combining characters, so strikethrough text pasted from this generator renders with the line intact. It's one of the cleaner uses of strikethrough — a single word crossed out in a bio reads as deliberate editorial, not a mistake.

Does strikethrough text render the same on iPhone and Android? +

On modern iOS and Android, yes — the combining stroke used here is part of standard Unicode combining-mark support. On very old Android builds, the stroke may render as a separate dash after each letter rather than overlaid on it; the underlying text is still readable either way.

Can I use strikethrough in a Discord message? +

Discord has its own double-tilde markdown (~~like this~~) that renders strikethrough inside messages. The Unicode strikethrough from this generator works as well, and it's the only way to get strikethrough into Discord server names, channel names, role names and user profiles, where markdown isn't parsed.

Why does strikethrough text sometimes show as two characters on old devices? +

The strike is a combining character that sits on top of the previous letter. Older rendering engines that don't support combining marks show it as a separate dash-like glyph next to the letter. This is rare on anything released in the last decade — the vast majority of readers will see the stroke overlaid correctly.
